This chapter says what messages OpinVera sends, by which channel, on what basis, and how you stop them. It supplements Terms of Service §24 (Electronic Communications) and Privacy Policy §4, and it is the chapter the notification settings in the app and on the web point at.
1. The three kinds of message
| Kind | What it is | Examples | Basis | Can you turn it off? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Service | A message the Service cannot work without, or that the law requires us to send. | A sign-in code; a receipt; the outcome of a report you made; a decision on your account and the reasons; a change to these terms; a security notice. | Performance of our contract with you; legal obligation. | No. It stops when your account closes. |
| Activity | Something happened on the Platform that concerns you. | A ballot you opened is still open; someone accepted your invitation; a connection request; a ballot you cast has a published result. | Our legitimate interest in running a platform you can keep up with, balanced by a per-category control and one-click opt-out. | Yes, per category, in Settings, and by the unsubscribe link in any such email. |
| Digest | A periodic summary. | A weekly summary of your circle; new voters on an opinion you published. | Your opt-in. We send no digest you did not ask for. | Yes, and it is off until you turn it on. |
We send no marketing email and no marketing push at launch. If that changes, it will be opt-in, separately recorded, and this chapter will say so first.
2. Email
Every activity and digest email carries a one-click unsubscribe link that works without signing in and can only reduce what you receive, our postal address, and an accurate sender name. The link is valid for thirty (30) days and is tied to your account. A service email carries no unsubscribe because it cannot be turned off; it is sent only when the Service needs to tell you something.
An address that bounces or complains is suppressed and we stop sending to it, including after the account it belonged to is gone.
3. Push notifications
We ask the operating system for permission to send push notifications only after showing you what they are for, and never on first launch. Push is used for activity and service messages; it is never used for marketing. You can turn push off per category in Settings, or entirely in the operating system's settings, at any time.
4. Invitations and the invitee's address
When you invite someone by email, we send one invitation to the address you gave. We hold that address in readable form for fourteen (14) days so that we can send the one reminder described below, and then we delete it; what remains after that is a one-way hash that lets us recognise the address if it joins, and nothing that lets us contact it. If the invitation is not accepted after seven (7) days we send one reminder, to the invitee, carrying a one-click link that stops any further message to that address. We send nothing else to an address that has not joined. By inviting someone you confirm you know them and have reason to think they would welcome the invitation.
5. Decisions about you
A decision we take about your account, a report you made or a report about you is delivered as a service message and tells you the reasons and how to appeal, as the Community Guidelines §5 and Terms of Service §6.7 promise.
6. Members under the age of majority
A member below the Platform's age gate who is awaiting adult approval receives service messages only.
7. Frequency and restraint
Each activity category has a ceiling on how often it can message you, a reminder is sent at most once, and a reminder is never sent for something you have already done. We do not send a message to re-engage an inactive member, and we do not send mail to a person who has not joined, apart from the single invitation and the single reminder in §4.
