This document forms part of the Partner Terms. It says what OpinVera may show of a Partner's work on its surfaces, at each of three tiers, and what each tier is in law. A Partner chooses a tier when it claims its outlet; Tier 0 applies until it does, and an outlet that has not been claimed is always at Tier 0.
1. What never changes with the tier
- The score, the ballot and the published result are about the work and are shown at every tier. A tier changes what we display of the work, never whether it is rated or how.
- Our crawler honours
robots.txtand machine-readable text-and-data-mining reservations at every tier. A tier above the floor never overrides a refusal to crawl; it only governs what we display of what we were permitted to read. - Nothing in a tier is a licence to include the article body in a licence of the Corpus (see the Corpus Consent and Licence §5).
- A tier is revocable by the Partner from the account at any time, with effect on our surfaces within twenty-four (24) hours.
2. The tiers
| Tier | What we may show | The basis | How it is set | Money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 0 — Headline and link (the floor, and the default) | The title, the canonical link, the outlet's name and mark, the publication date, the author's name. | The metadata a page publishes in order to be linked to. In the EU, the hyperlink and very-short-extract exceptions to the press publishers' right (Art. 15 CDSM); in the US, facts and titles, which copyright does not protect. No grant is needed and none is recorded. | Nothing to set. | None. |
| Tier 1 — Summary | Tier 0, plus the description the page itself publishes for sharing (og:description or description, capped at 150 characters) and the sharing image the page itself publishes (og:image). | The Partner's grant, recorded on the claim with who set it and when. These fields are published for exactly this preview use; the grant makes that explicit rather than assumed. | One click from a weak or strong claim. Revocable. | Free, in both directions. |
| Tier 2 — Full text | Tier 1, plus the article body in a reader view on our ballot page. | A written licence of the Partner's copyright, negotiated and signed, recorded on the account as the agreement version. Never self-serve. | A request from a strong claim; a conversation; a signed licence. | Flows to the Partner, or offsets the Partner's plan, as the licence says. |
3. Where each tier shows
| Surface | Tier 0 | Tier 1 | Tier 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| The ballot page for an item | Title, mark, link, date | Plus summary and image | Plus the reader view behind the ballot |
| The embed on the Partner's own page | Nothing of the Partner's — the page is the content | Same | Same |
| The browser extension's panel | Title and mark (the page is open beside it) | Plus the summary in the result card | As Tier 1 |
| The feed and the outlet's profile page | Title and mark | Plus summary and image | Plus summary — never the body in a list |
| Alerts (push and email) | Headline only | Headline only | Headline only |
4. The Partner's warranties at Tier 1 and Tier 2
By setting Tier 1 the Partner warrants that it has the right to grant display of its sharing description and image, including where the image is a third party's work licensed to the Partner. By signing a Tier 2 licence the Partner warrants the same for the body. The Partner indemnifies OpinVera against a third-party claim that it did not.
5. Attribution and integrity
At every tier we show the work with the outlet's name and mark and a link to the canonical page, and we do not alter a title, a summary or a body beyond truncation at the cap. A Partner may ask us to correct a title or summary we hold where its page has changed; we re-read the page and update what we hold.
6. If the basis for Tier 1 is read differently
The 150-character cap on the summary is set at the length the EU case law has treated as a very short extract. If a court or regulator in a country where the Platform operates reads a sharing description of that length as outside the exception, OpinVera will move the Tier 1 grant to the strong claim level in that country and tell affected Partners; existing grants continue unless the Partner withdraws them.
